Rewards for Behavior or School Work???

So, I was reading an email thread today in one of the many online groups I belong to and a comment was made about rewarding children for something they should be doing anyway without reward.  Now I get that train of thought and at times I even support it....but, on the other hand, what's wrong with a little positive reinforcement if the work/chore gets done?  I struggle with this all of the anyone out there have any words of wisdom, either way?

Wow, time sure gets away from you!

Wow, I cannot believe how long it has been since I last posted.  We sure have been busy....I'd like to say it was all bookwork, but it hasn't been.  We've been learning about equally important things though...things like teamwork, being a member of a community (family), and some history & science too.  A few weeks ago we watched a special on the History channel about "The History of Thanksgiving" and we've been watching videos on the Bible...learned about where Jesus walked...places he had visited and we've gotten up to his crucifixion and resurrection.  Last night we watched a video about An Arctic Tale...all about the survival of polar bears and walruses in the Artctic regions and how each year their spring/summer season gets longer and longer.  They say if the the trend continues, there will be no ice for either species by the year 2040!

Our teamwork and community learning has revolved around what it takes to be a member of a family....taking responsibility to help maintain our home - TOGETHER!  That's been really nice.  It was very impressive to see the initiative each of my kids took to help with our Thanksgiving dinner...everyone had a part in the preparation and that had a good time doing it too!  It felt really wonderful to not be slaving all day in the kitchen to have the meal consumed in 5 minutes or less.  We had the opportunity to share in the meal together.  It was also wonderful to hear, as we rounded our island (dining room full of papers!), what each member of our family was thankful for, and none of it was material!

I hope to do a better job of keeping up on the blog in the days that lie ahead....but for today we work a little more on that home maintenance in preparation to bring out the Christmas decorations (which the children are EAGERLY awaiting!)....and then perhaps we'll start working on some lapbooks....I found a great site at  We've signed up for their newsletter which gave us access to a Free Lapbook: An Overview of the 17th Century.  I think that I'll download the one on the Polar Express and am sure that there will be other great ones that we'll be adding to our collection as well.
